Summer Language Week Two

Went by way too fast. Highlight of the week was having 8 S.L.I. students come to church with me on Sunday! And then afterwards we went to Neda and walked around on the dunes. It was kinda exciting in a not so great way one of the elderly teachers passed out during the service and was taken away in an ambulance, but the many prayers were answered and she was okay and home by evening.

Last weekend we went to Palanga on Sunday and I walked around with a bunch of students, had some good conversations and fun times. Almost daily groups of us are going for walks around Klaipeda late at night. Sometimes it is good conversation, other times it's pretty blah; such is life. Tuesday we talked about Sex in our discussion group, it was a pretty good conversation, but not as good as our discussion on dating on Thursday...that was pretty cool and I got to share a lot of advice on relationships. Also, since there were only three guys, we got put on the spot for "what do you look for a girlfriend/spouse." It's been interesting talking about relationships, because I feel like there's a gap between the ideals in the students heads and what actually happens in their lives; but maybe it's because some students feel pressured to give the "right" answers in our group. Wednesday I visited the Catholic Church with a student I'd connected to (despite close proximity) via facebook. That was cool, although I definitely didn't understand anything. At Soul Outpost (our lunch worship time) we had Andreta, a Latvian woman who went from hating studying in high school to enrolling in Princeton Theological this fall, and Jake and Lisa, a married couple who are staff from Point Loma, share some of their testimonies and stories. All three of them are very joyful people, and it was really cool to listen to them.

Friday was all the excitement of the Talent show! I may have worn my sister's dress, but I haven't told her that yet...I got to emcee the program with Emma, the most outgoing 10 year old I've ever met...it was a blast. So fun! I think my favorite gag we came up with was I was asking her about traditional American dances and she starts doing the robot and I'm like no, no, like the moonwalk or something and she starts jumping slowly across the stage: "That's one small step for man." Also, probably one of the highlights of my summer so far, I got to perform "Falling Slowly" from Once with a Russian guy and two Lithuanian girls. It was really cool with three voices, two guitars, and the piano...we didn't win, but we didn't care.

On Saturday we went to the orphanage again and I played guitar...the kids were patient, and played the right hand for whole songs while I sang and changed the chords. It was really cool to see a bunch of my student friends really taking an interest in these kids...some of them are from Klaipeda, so this isn't like going to Mexico for them, so I pray they'll get involved locally and learn to serve regularly.

Two weeks down: a handful of good spiritual conversations, a lot of great friendships, and anybody in the program who didn't know me before the talent show knows me now...some good connections and encouraging conversations, met some solid Lithuanian and Russian and Polish believers from different backgrounds. Great conversations! Pray that we would finish strong!
