Two weeks of craziness in New York! I learned a ton about community and Covenant House, the organization I'm interning with in the next nine months, as well as things about gangs, social work, interpersonal communication and conflict, and not burning out. It's going to be interesting. I caught myself a couple times getting caught up in the acts of praying and having quiet time rather than relating to God. Highlights were meeting some friends from Oklahoma and Lithuania, good conversations with the other Formees, and singing songs in Central Park (the kids passing by loved it) and at home (even got some Russian ones in there! It was really a blessing I met like 10 Russians in the last two weeks...it made me feel less homesick.). It was a wearying two weeks, but like I said I learned a lot. Our community was fairly diverse, I'd say you'd have the full spectrum from "apostate" to sold-out, although everyone was raised Catholic or Protestant, as well as a token Canadian. :)
So now I'm here in Atlantic City living with three girls and a guy who are also volunteering (sharing one car and purse and prayer time despite varied schedules). I'll be working in the transitional living program starting tomorrow. It's beautiful here. So I think I'm gonna go kayak and get some sunset pictures. :)
Ah yes, the Church of Canada.
