So I've tried to always have the attitude that if you're trying something new and it doesn't go well, it probably just means that you need to learn how to do it better and practice it. And since I've cooked for 40 before on my Thanksgiving dinners, when Kate told me that they needed a cook more than anything else for the conference she was organizing, I said, "sure, if that's what you need."
Despite some long working hours and a little stress about getting things out on time, all in all things were a success. I'm used to cooking with very little and on a very tight budget, so I managed to be a couple hundred Euros underbudget, which I actually kinda regret, cuz fifty more Euros would have made things a lot tastier and interesting, but hey, everyone survived and really liked the fish tacos. :)
Being in the kitchen for a week was perhaps the most restful time I've had in the last two years. It was really nice. I had a few pretty amazing helpers too. One four-year old Russian kid helped me chop cucumbers. :) I also got to talk about life and music and calling with one of the students, who really enjoyed hanging out and helping. And I did life-coaching with another new friend who was helping with translation for the conference. But mostly I kept a low-profile and stayed close to the kitchen. Dish-washing would probably be my therapy of choice.
Maybe the best thing about the week though, was seeing Kate and Jonas and Ania put together a real quality conference, speaking, leading, leading worship, and serving. I'm so proud of my little sister, and I know the talks on leadership and calling and living out faith touched the participants in many ways. Oh yeah, and Kate and I tore up the dance floor big time once. That was fun too.
The last day the staff got together and went out to dinner. We were about to finish up when I asked one of the staff, a lady from Northern Ireland, how she became involved with the conference. Kate followed it up by asking her how she met God. Three hours later, we'd all shared our testimonies. What a encouraging evening! And I love how even in such a small way, I was able to team with my amazing sister to make something awesome happen! :)
